It’s 2 am and you can’t sleep. As you flip through the channels, you notice there is a common theme for all the insomniacs to watch: The next big fitness craze! Whether it’s a diet and exercise program, beauty products, or a kitchen accessory to prepare healthier meals, you are being offered something to improve your quality of life on cheesy infomercials.
The Allure Of Infomercials
If you’re anything like me, you try to ignore the “there’s only 15 minutes left to receive our special price!” or “call today to get started on a new you!” anthems being chanted on these infomercials.
But they do a great job of getting you revved up and motivated! And they keep you motivated at least for the next 5 minutes – and 5 minutes is all it takes until you’re pulling the credit card out, and listening to cheesy music on the telephone while waiting for the operator.
I tend not to fall for the gimmicks, though, because my husband’s frugal voice resonating in my head is louder than the suave sounds of the infomercial announcer. And truthfully, taking a step back, giving in to such impulse is the worst thing you could do![Fat Guy here: Although, I’m usually frugal and level-headed when it comes to these types of purchases, I have been known to buy my fair share of sports cards over the years! Next time I’ll be sure to say no, or at least find NFL Shop coupons first.]
I’ve read nightmarish tales of infomercials, such as continuous items and credit card charges that were a pain to stop, high pressured tactics used to get consumers to buy more and in greater quantities than they originally bargained for, and unfulfilled refund policies!
How To Avoid Overspending Through Infomercials
I bypass this all together by going to trusted retailers that sell these products, sometimes cheaper than buying directly. Sites like Amazon.com are extremely helpful for these situations because you are able to buy the products new or used if you’d like to save some money.
Also, you are able to read reviews from people who’ve tried it before you to determine if you’d like to take the risk. These reviews tend to be a lot different from the testimonials you see on the infomercials!
In a lot of cases you can also get free shipping and Amazon offers an excellent return policy if you are not satisfied with the product. Another site I use when trying to save on healthy lifestyle products is overstock.com. The prices are reasonable and I can also get an Overstock coupon code for additional savings. Also, no matter how many items you buy, Overstock’s shipping is always the same low price of $2.95 on your entire order.
So the next time you are up late at night watching infomercials and some attractive voice is telling you to, “Just act now!” – instead of picking up the phone, head over to the computer and see what other offers are out there for the same product!
