My husband Todd and I are working hard to train our children up in the ways of the Lord. It is something that is very important to us, and we have been able to do an adequate job of this I’d say. Just recently we purchased something that will make this even easier. We know the Bible is the best place to turn to for direction and discipline with our children.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Past Experiences With Child Training Bible Verses
For example, our 9 year old son has had problems with anger in the past. We get a note from the teacher or principal for that matter. We send him to his room, while my husband frantically is looking for verses from the Bible on anger. He has to get his Bible, concordance, a pen, and a note card. He spends time writing out verses for our son to look up and discuss. So a good amount of time has passed while he waits in his room.
Todd spends time with him going over the verses and discussing each one. He tells him to keep the note card and read those verses. Guess, what I find on the floor within days. Yes, the note card looks like it’s been through a war, and that’s if we can even find it. Long story short, this system is tedious and not the most consistent or effective.
The Discovery of a Child Training Bible System
While cruising around Pinterest and looking up the term “home school ideas”( I am not home schooling, but it’s something I am looking at for the future with my girls.) , I found something that is going to really help our family. I found this under the title “10 Must Haves for our Home School.” The Child Training Bible was something they used to redirect their children. I can see this is going to be a must-have for our family.
I went to the link that was given for the Child Training Bible. It was a very easy site to use, and there was a great video tutorial explaining the use of it, and how to assemble it. It isn’t an actual Bible that you buy, but rather a kit that you put together. It is a system of special cards, highlighters, post-it tabs, and a Bible of your choice. There are links on the site of which things to buy and where to get them. You buy the actual Child Training Bible cards from them for a reasonable price of about $9.00.
The cards have topics that your child will deal with such as anger, jealousy, discouragement, lying, tattling, disobedience, wrong friendships, and many more. You use the cards to line up colored tabs along the edge to mark the pages with verses on those topics. You use the highlighter to highlight the specific verse with a coordinating color. It took me 3 hours to set up the Bible putting tabs and highlighting in it.
It is an investment of time that I feel will be well worth it.
Our Future With Training Our Children From The Bible
We now have a one-stop Bible to go to for training our children. The scenario I mentioned above would go something like this. Our son would come home from school with a note. We would take the Child Training Bible out and look for the tab corresponding with the behavior. Let’s say it was anger, we would flip to the tabs that are lined up under the anger category. We open it up and point straight to the verses. No time needs to go by so we can look up the verses.
The Bible will be kept in a place that we can go to every time as needed. There are no note cards to get lost or ruined. There is also a place on the back of the cards that have a guide of discussion you can have with your children to make them think about what they did, what Jesus says about this, and then a prayer you can say with your child.
As I was setting the Bible up, I found myself meditating on these verses. It became obvious to me this Bible will be training the parents in this house as well. I know that if I have a problem, I can also come to this Bible and have the verses at hand. I really had a great time in the Word, while preparing this Bible for my children.
I have noticed that so many times I think I am doing something for our children, but it ends up being a lesson or blessing to me also.
I am excited to have this and use it to bring my children up in His ways, which are far better than the ways of the world.
