Since we recently moved, we had a lot of abnormal expenses come up. As you know, we are still trying to pay off debt – over $100,000 worth – and our emergency fund is not yet complete! That’s why I was excited today when my wife told me that we will save money on car insurance for the remainder of the year!
We’ve done most of the standard things necessary in order to save money on car insurance (we even went as far as to take defensive driving courses), but I still wasn’t happy with the amount that we are paying for our two cars.
Here is the one thing that we finally did that made a huge difference…
Our Move Helped Us To Save Money On Car Insurance
Although we didn’t move far, we did change counties. We didn’t live in a town that was known for violence or stolen cars, and I didn’t move that much closer to work (about 15-20 minutes away now vs 25-35 before); but it is a little quieter and safer. Apparently, that was enough for us to save over $300 on our insurance premiums for the rest of the year! Maybe we could have thought about living with friends or relatives in the past in order to save a little money!
I can’t wait to see how much this move will save us over a full year – our policy renews in February (maybe I can add a lower annual bill to my list of frugal Valentine’s day ideas…as long as I gift wrap it first ;-)). I haven’t fully looked at the paperwork they sent over, but I’m sure it outlines the changes in more detail. Once we see how this savings affects our payments (we pay our premiums monthly, and they are taken out automatically), then we will divert our savings to our emergency fund.
Save Money On Car Insurance Without Trying?
When we first signed the lease nearly 2 months ago, the thought of being able to save money on car insurance crossed my mind for a split second. After that, I hadn’t given it another thought. My wife was simply calling our insurance carrier to alert them of our change in address. We figured that it might be worth a couple of dollars, but definitely not $300!!!
The only thing that we did in order to reduce insurance costs was to make sure that the company had our updated information. That should serve as a reminder to us all that we need to stay on top of little things like updating all of the companies that we deal with, whenever there is a change.
We are planning on combining this policy with some type of home contents insurance within the next month, so hopefully that will mean more savings!!! Now if our bank would just give us the option of depositing checks from home, we could save even more!
