This is the 2nd post in an ongoing series, where I talk about some of the things that I observe, which I feel best characterize the attitudes and actions that have helped to make us an obese nation. In other words, these are the reasons why we are fat!
In my estimation, rather than being one or two things that can be blamed for the fattening up of America, there are actually a number of things that have contributed.
Whenever I see something that I think represents the problem with either humor or frustration, I will use this ongoing series as a platform to talk about it.
In the first post, I talked about people wasting time and money waiting for parking spaces and how that is a good illustration of our lazy culture.
Warning, what follows is a rant. This is not some organized collection of thoughts or the results of sifting through research or data points. This is simply my reaction to and firsts thoughts about an all-to-common situation!
Getting Fat While Driving
So the other day while I was driving to work I noticed that the car which was coming toward me began to swerve. As my car passed hers (yes, it was a woman driver ;-)) I looked over to see what the cause of her distraction really was (I expected her to be texting). However, as I looked over at her, all I was able to see was a huge bag of chips, and her head thrown completely back as she was pouring the chips down her throat and inhaling the entire bag!
So this woman took her eyes off of the road for at least 10 seconds in order to eat potato chips. She was willing to risk her life and the lives of all those on the road with her because she couldn’t control her chip craving for a few minutes! When she drove past me her eyes were looking straight up into the ceiling of her car (actually, they might have been closed as she was overtaken by the euphoria of the greasy, fried, potatoes)!!
This isn’t a one-time occurrence, either. Each week I see several people who take their eyes off of the road in order to eat or drink something. Every time I see it, I just can’t believe that someone is so overtaken by the desire to taste something, that they are willing to put their life on the line in order to have it!
And we’re not talking about an “all or nothing” proposition here. If you want the food that badly, then pull over and throw it down your throat and then continue driving…or, just exercise a tiny bit of patience until you get to your destination!
Our preoccupation with eating, drinking, and satisfying our base desires has caused all sorts of trouble for us. Too many of us seek a ridiculous amount of pleasure from what we eat and drink, and we are unwilling to consider the consequences of such behavior!
Why is it that I see so many people eating in their cars now? Why is it that people feel like they can’t wait an extra 5 minutes before taking a few bites of their burger, pizza, or even Chinese Food?!?! I wonder how many shirts, pants (oh, those stained crotches), ties, and car seats have been ruined by someone dropping food or spilling juice or soda while driving.
If that wasn’t bad enough, now you have people swerving off of the road or into oncoming traffic, just to get one more bite of that cheesesteak!
When I see how we all mindlessly eat and see us shovel well over a thousand calories into our bodies in the space of 2 city blocks, it’s no wonder why we are such a fat nation!
