Last week my company was closed for Christmas break. So, between holiday meals and the lack of a structured weekday, my workout and diet faced a serious challenge. However, I knew that I couldn’t stand the thought of gaining weight, simply because I lacked discipline during my time away from work.
I even started posting videos for my 100 push ups challenge, in order to help keep my goal in front of me. Every since I increased some of my reps (as well as my running time), I’ve felt even better about my workouts!
I decided to keep track of the reps that I did over the break, in order to evaluate my ability to stay disciplined when faced with more “freedom”. I took 3 straight days off at one point – I stayed at someone’s house overnight, and then had a lot to do the following day. Also, I never work out on Sundays, so that is an automatic day of rest for me.
Overall, this is what did from 12/24/11 – 1/03/12:
- 144+ Minutes – Warm Up/Stretch
- 375 Ball Slams
- 1020 Lunges
- 300 Push Ups
- 500 Squats
- 150 Full-Body Sit Ups
- 330 Oblique Crunches
- 240 Reverse Crunches
- 450 Regular Crunches
- Running ~ 4.87 Miles in ~86:00
I hurt my leg while running on Tuesday (1/3/12), so this was accomplished in only 5 full workouts, and one partial. As you can see, when I have the time to dedicate 1.5-2 hours, I really make a big deal of stretching and my warm up.
Looking at these numbers now, I know that I would not have been able to do this back in November – especially the running. I did just about 5 miles over 6 workouts…yes, I still did my second run after hurting my leg (it felt much better than trying to do lunges)!
It was a great week, and even though I worked out really hard, I had a lot of rest days as well.
Now On To The Weigh In
Week 0 (First Weigh In) – 287
Week 1 -280.0
Week 2 – 279.2
Week 3 – 278.0
Week 4 – 276.4
Week 5 – 270.8
Week 6 – 269.0
Week 7 – 267.4
A weekly loss of 1.6 lbs; which drops my total to 19.6 lbs in 7 weeks. I am really encouraged by the fact that I got through this time of the year while still losing weight! I was able to close out 2011 strong, and have momentum for the new year.

Thanks! It was definitely not easy, but I love the fact that I can look back and know that I tried hard.
That is awesome!! I totally gained weight over the holidays but I’m working on losing all that excess water weight ; )

I know that many people planned to gain weight over the holidays. I lost 7 lbs in the first week…it was probably all water weight! I just want to make sure I don’t come in last in your challenge.
I’m always so impressed when I read about your workouts. My contribution toward improving my health has been wearing a pedometer this week. I decided to see how many steps I usually take daily as a baseline, and then increase them. I figure that could be a fairly painless way to head in the right direction.

I have heard of a lot of people losing weight by using a pedometer. It makes us see how easy it is to become more active each day. How are you doing so far?
I’ve been happy with my progress. I’ve been walking at least 2 miles a day, and yesterday I did 3.
Looks like good progress ! I just posted an “Ideal Weight Chart” on my site. Stop by and check it out.
What’s your ultimate weight goal?

I’m going to look at the post now.
I’m not sure what my weight goal is now. At first it was to lose between 80 and 100 lbs; but now that I’ve lose over 25, I don’t think that 100 is a good goal. I think my body would level off at around 215 lbs or so. Basically, I am going to judge it by how I look and feel. I am a very stocky guy (even without the fat), so as long as I can maintain a muscular body, I’ll be happy.
Oh, someone at my church is suggesting that I play tennis. I don’t think I’ll ever do that, but it made me think of you!
That’s impressive to lose weight during the holiday season. I think if you put together a plan or blog for the end of this year you will have a lot of people reading to find out how to do that. I don’t know one person who lost weight during the season. Congrats.
Thanks Jai! I think that’s a great idea. I will have to plan to write about that ahead of time. I want to make sure that people don’t use holidays or anything else as an excuse to throw away discipline!
Almost 20 lbs in 7b weeks, very impressive!
This is awesome, man! It gives me motivation with my pre-wedding goal! My fiancee and I are trying to get shredded before our honeymoon. Great job thus far!
